What is a lever?

A lever is a simple machine consisting of a beam that rotates on a pivot (fulcrum). On the basis of the location of fulcrum, load and effort, the lever is divided into three types:

• First class
• Second class
• Third class

In a lever mechanical advantage is achieved by applying a small amount of force over a larger distance to exert a higher amount of force over a smaller distance.
